“This is Carter Landry,” Mercy said as he went around the table, introducing each person to Gray. “He works for the US Attorney’s office, and he’s on our side. He’s a win-win for us.”

“Nice to meet you, Graciella. Though I wish it were under different circumstances,” Carter said, offering a friendly nod and matching smile. “I’m technically on a leave of absence, but this case has been on my desk for the better part of my career, and you’re the first real break I’ve gotten. I’ll be here working with you, not against you.”

“Thank you. I appreciate your kindness. And you can call me Gray,” she replied. “I recognize the risk you are taking by not arresting me and trying my case. Please know that if anything should happen – anything at all – I will not implicate anyone who has helped me along the way. You have my deepest respect and appreciation, and that comes with loyalty.”

The men around the table all nodded in response as a mutual respect was established.

“There will be no reason to implicate. It’s clear you did nothing wrong, and we’re going to prove that.” Killion O’Reilly said. “I have dug up quite a bit, and we’ll use all of it against the people who have hurt you and many like you. With your help, I think Carter will have a strong enough case to end this trafficking ring. And if we don’t have enough, well…we have names and resources.”

Gray’s eyes went wide at the admission.

Killion put his hands up as he sat taller. “That wasn’t to frighten you. It was just to say… Well… I’m a very literal guy. I don’t always think before I speak, and I meant exactly how that sounded. But don’t worry. We are all good guys and on the right side of this, and…”

Mercy laughed. “Killion over there is the brains of the group. He runs all intel from this room. This is the lair. Those computer screens all over the wall are sort of like how his brain works. He means no harm. I think we all are feeling what he is when it comes to what we’ve uncovered and how long and deep this goes.”

“Then you did find something. Something you can use?” Gray asked.

“We did,” Mercy said. “Killion?”

Killion nodded and took the lead. With a few quick clicks on the keyboard, the screens on the wall in front of him began to populate, revealing different images, mostly of men. Men Gray recognized. Her eyes danced from screen to screen, her breathing quickening as if panic was setting in. Mercy reached for her hand, and she jumped, quick to force a smile when she realized how she’d reacted. Gray looked at each of the men, one at a time. It was clear to all she was uncomfortable and even frightened. Not of them, but of what she saw on the screens. The men and women in the images.

Mercy leaned in and asked, “Are you okay? We don’t have to do this right now.
